  • Description

Le Bijou - the Gem - is a charming one-bedroom apartment located in L'Isle sur la Sorgue. The town is perfectly situated as a base for excursions throughout Provence. The Mediterranean is one hour south, Mont Ventoux a short drive to the north and many other places of interest in the south of France are easily reached from this location. Le Bijou will be a comfortable and convenient place to serve as a respite after a day of exploring the perched villages, vineyards, Roman ruins and other points of western Provence.

If you intend to visit the region to simply relax and enjoy life in a French village, L'Isle will not disappoint you. On Sundays the streets and squares are alive with vendors and visitors to the town's market. L'Isle sur la Sorgue is the antique capital of the south of France. You will find treasures of every kind daily in the antique shops and on weekends merchants come to display their wares on the sidewalks.

You can idle away the afternoon in the several parks or stroll along the Sorgue where water wheels that once powered mills and factories still turn in the river. Throughout the village are restaurants offering a variety of cuisine. Start your day with coffee and a croissant in the morning sun, and join locals in the shade of a canopy with an afternoon apéritif at one of the cafés and bars along the Sorgue.

The apartment is located on a lively square in the center of town. Boulangeries, patisseries, and cafés are just out the front door. Le Bijou was completely renovated in September 2012.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is easily accessible from the A-7 autoroute. The TGV station at Avignon is 25 minutes by car and the Marseille airport is an easy drive of slightly less than an hour.

We stayed at Le Bijou for a week in February and absolutely loved it! The location was perfect allowing us to walk L' Isle sur la Sorgue and explore. The Sunday market is a must...amazing foods and gifts. There are plenty of fantastic restaurants (Mistral was our favorite!) and coffee shops (la maison Jouvaud is a must!). Day trips were extremely easy from Le Bijou and L'Isle sur la Sorgue. Marseille was just an hour drive to the south or you can use the train station in nearby Avignon to many other areas. Le Bijou had everything we needed! I would absolutely recommend a stay at Le Bijou!

Owner Response: We are delighted to know that you enjoyed your visit and took in so much of what L'Isle sur la Sorgue has to offer. We look forward to having you visit again.

We enjoyed our stay in L'sle sur la Sorgue and Le Bijou!! The location enabled us to be truly immersed in the French culture. From the Sunday markets to the several side trips to Lacoste, Gordes, Bonneiu and Fontane Vancluse the week flew by. A visit to Chateauneuf-du-Pape was equally spectacular. We took a private tour of the vineyards and were treated to a terrific wine tasting with Guy Bremond the local owner of the vineyard. We used Time4Provence for the tour and our guide was Gordana one of the owners of the company. Thanks to all...Patti, Kevin and Helen for a memorable experience. Bob and Susan

Owner Response: Bob and Susan, We are delighted to hear that you had a good time in Provence. Thanks for the tip on the vineyard tour provider. We like hearing about great finds such as this to pass along to our guests. Hope you can visit again one day. Patty and Kevin

Patty and Kevin were very accommodating and even checked in on us when we arrived. They have thought of everything and give you all the information about the town and nearby sites. We truly felt right at home in the little flat and hope to return one day.

Owner Response: Thanks for your kind thoughts. This is now our 5th year in Isle sur la Sorgue. Time flies! We continue to add new experiences we encounter such as restaurants, vineyards and suggestions for day-trips to the information we provide our guests. Happy to be of service to you in making your stay enjoyable. Take a look at Kevin's webpage - surlaroutekm.com - as you plan your next trip to the Vaucluse. You are welcome back to Le Bijou anytime. A very comfortable apt. In the heart of Ille. Full size kitchen and private patio on the back of the apt. From the kitchen window you can view the street life right outdoors. There migbt be a market going on or someone singing old romantic songs. We arrived in the middle of a heat wave so we did not explore as much of the area as we would have liked to. If you want to experience life in a small Provence town this is al great place to do it. Be sure to make use of the trains and buses. Marselles is a fun place to visit by train and great harbour restaurants.

This is a freshly-renovated 1-bedroom apartment in a wonderful town perched on the Sorgue River. The town boasts terrific shops and restaurants along with its famous antique shops and twice-weekly markets. The Sunday market is the largest of the week and spans items from local food to crafts to clothing. The apartment itself is small but has a chef's kitchen with every possible cooking amenity. In a week's stay we only ate out twice because it was such a luxury to cook at our leisure with fresh ingredients purchased in the town. There is a grocery store 2 blocks away. There is free parking located just a block away in the lot behind the post office. We never had to wait or search for a space. The bedroom is small, but the king sized bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is also incredibly functional with ample water pressure and plenty of hot water. The shower itself is quite large. And of course the terrace is wonderful, with plenty of space to seat 4 for dinner. The wifi works like a charm. The town itself is conveniently-located. We took easy day trips to Montpellier & Nimes, St. Remy & Arles, Fontaine de Vaucluse, and Avignon & Chateauneuf de Pape. We also took a longer day trip to Monte Carlo and Nice. All in all, a terrific vacation in a great apartment.

Owner Response: So glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the apartment. You certainly covered a lot of ground in a week, and still made it back to cook. Isle sur la Sorgue is a great town for a base from which to visit the Vaucluse, as you discovered. We hope that you can visit again. Patty and Kevin

This beautiful apartment is masterfully designed -- it's beautiful, comfortable, and has absolutely everything you could possibly need. The kitchen is fantastic, and all of the appliance are clean and new. The bathroom is large and very beautiful, with a nice sink, spacious shower, and a radiator/towel warmer. The bed takes up most of the bedroom, but the double closet is designed to accommodate all your needs, and there are shelves and under-the-bed containers for shoes. The linens and towels were nice and of high quality. There is washing machine and a drying rack, which served our purposes well. We spent a week at Le Bijou during late February/early March, after spending four days in Paris. We took the high-speed train to Avignon, where we rented a car and drove the 30 min. trip to L'Isle Sur La Sorgue. This town is really lovely, surrounded by water dotted with charming, moss-covered waterwheels. Be sure to walk the pathway to the spot where the river hits the town and divides, encircling the town. L'Isle Sur La Sorgue is known for the market it hosts on Sundays (smaller version on Thursdays, as well). The town is perfectly situated to accommodate day trips all over the Provence region, and we took full advantage of that. We drove to different towns every day except Sunday, as we wanted to experience the full effect of the market that day. We found the residents of the town to be very kind and welcoming, and most spoke English. We had exceptional dinners at L'Aparte, and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at La Chinois -- a great place to sit in the sun and people-watch on Sunday. Chez Stephan was another favorite place to sit and relax with a glass of wine and cheese/charcuterie plate. The apartment was a nice, warm, comfortable home base for us to come back to after a long day of exploring. We hope to come back sometime soon!

Owner Response: Thanks so much for the kind note. We are happy to hear that you had such a wonderful visit to L'Isle sur la Sorgue and that you found our apartment comfortable and met your needs. It is always good to know that our guests find the town as friendly as we do. Your review was a nice reminder of the great (lucky) choice of locations for our home in France. The terrace was a huge bonus to spend time outside enjoying some coffee, wine or dining al fresco. The location in town is perfect with many great restaurants, cafes and shopping nearby. It was also a wonderful jump-off point to visit Provence. We made several day trips around to see the sights, there is so much to see and taste!! On Sunday, the market sets up in town and is filled with many wonderful vendors from olive, cheese and sausage stands to linens, pottery, art and local crafts. The owners suggestions were terrific and added so much to our vacation! Will definitely go back, my only regret is that it wont be soon enough!

Owner Response: Thanks for the note Alfred. We enjoy hearing that our guests have found the apartment - and the village - enjoyable. We hope you can visit L'Isle again soon.

During our first visit to Provence, we chose to stay at Le Bijou for what turned out to be an amazing week. Patty and Kevin were extremely helpful in planning our trip, and despite a very long delay on our arrival day (which amounted to over 24 hours in transit!), we got checked into the apartment with no problems. Patty was available via email during that delay, and she was keeping the caretaker up to date with our last-minute travel changes. This was our first time renting from VRBO, and I don't think our experience with the owners could have been any better! In fact, it was so good that we're seriously considering canceling our hotel reservations for an upcoming trip to Belgium and booking through VRBO again. The apartment is lovely, with a great terrace and separate bedroom. We stayed in the middle of summer during a heat wave, and the A/C was necessary and worked perfectly. Parking is free at a nearby lot, with less than a 5 minute walk to the apartment. We had no trouble at all rolling our luggage that distance. The neighbors were very quiet (didn't see or hear them at all), and we had no street noise despite a festival that was taking place while we were there. Wifi also worked perfectly, although we were so relaxed that we actually forgot we had email. That was a real vacation! The town of LSLS itself is darling, with plenty of shops, restaurants (including a reasonably-priced Michelin-starred restaurant), and market activity to keep you busy, but still small enough to be charming. The apartment shares a street with a couple of bakeries, a butcher, and a small grocery store. We quickly developed a morning routine of starting a pot of coffee and heading to the bakery for fresh croissants and baguettes. We felt like locals! It is also a perfect location for exploring the larger Provencal region. We rented a car and explored the Luberon to the east, the towns of Avignon, Nimes, and Arles to the west and south, and the Cotes du Rhone to the north. Overall, our trip to Provence was amazing, thanks in large part to Le Bijou and Patty and Kevin. By the end of the second day, we wanted to come back. By the end of the fourth day we were talking about following Patty and Kevin's example and buying some vacation property there. By the end of the week, we were talking about retiring there permanently. Thank you Patty and Kevin for being such gracious hosts. This is truly a special place, and we can't wait to return!

Owner Response: Sarah and Jonathon, Happy to have had you as our guests in Provence. Our hope is for people to come to L'Isle and steal a glimpse of life as a Provencal. You certainly captured that spirit during your week at the apartment and we are pleased that you did. Your kind note sparked a desire here in Indiana to be back in the south of France. Your thoughts on finding a property in France may get you exploring the idea. That is how we started and we have no regrets. Perhaps we'll be neighbors one day. Patty and Kevin

    • Un Appartement Fantastique!

Reviewed by Anonymous on June 13, 2015 for their trip during May 2015

This was our first visit to Provence and we were lucky enough to have picked Patty and Kevin’s “Le Bijou” for our 3-week stay. First, interacting with Patty and Kevin was just a pleasure every step of the way. They were extremely friendly, responsive to our many questions and very helpful with suggestions. It was clear from the outset that they are much more than owners of the apartment. They are people in love with Provence who are eager to share that feeling with others. The apartment is truly a little gem from all facets - its excellent location of l’Isle sur la Sorgue, it’s location in the center of the village, proximity to easy free parking and of course, the apartment itself where every detail was thoughtfully considered. While the apartment is quite cozy in size, every corner of space is optimized so thoughtfully. The decor is warm and tasteful with a lovely Provencal flavor. The kitchen is very well equipped and laid out for anyone who wants to cook seriously, although we took more advantage of the excellent prepared foods from the Sunday/Thursday markets and the charcuterie nearby. The bathroom is very spacious with excellent water pressure. The bedroom is compact, yet has tons of storage space. And the bed is very comfortable, firm and supportive, especially if you have back issues. The location on the 2nd floor (3rd floor for Americans) allows great light into the apartment and a picturesque view over the rooftops from the patio, making it feel much more spacious. The last flight of stairs was slightly challenging for my husband who has a bad knee, but do-able and well worth it. Being in a primarily pedestrian zone, with all the important shops (boulangerie, charcuterie, fromagerie, wine cave) a few steps from the door, made the location charming. The Sunday/Thursday markets (food, crafts, souvenirs & antiques) just a minute down the street are an incredible feast for the senses. There is an excellent New Orleans jazz musician who plays on Sunday afternoons right outside the window, so you can listen and enjoy as you’re sipping the excellent wine you just bought at the market. And the gorgeous Sorgue river is just around the corner. If you happen to play petanque (boules) as we do, there are many places to play (bouladrome, Parc Gautier, on the paths along the river), people to watch, and friendly games to join. This was a fabulous holiday! What a perfect choice of Le Bijou, “un appartement fantastique”! Thank you Patty and Kevin!

Owner Response: Jackie and Pete, We are pleased to hear that your stay in L'Isle was enjoyable and that the amenities of our apartment helped to make your vacation memorable. It was fun to visit with you, albeit via e-mail and phone, as you planned your trip and while you were in Provence. We love to help people plan their travel to France, excursions in the area and to provide tips on living comfortably in the village. It is always nice to know that our guests have found the town a friendly place to visit. Hopefully you can return to Provence to renew your acquaintances in L'Isle sur la Sorgue and at the bouladrome. Best wishes, Patty & Kevin

    • Un Appartement Fantastique!

We have visited the Provence area several times before, but never have we enjoyed an apartment as much as Le Bijou! We stayed at the apartment for 6 weeks & it truly became like a second home. It is spotless & has everything anyone could ask for, from a beautifully appointed kitchen, great bathroom & a fabulous terrace that even included a BBQ. Between the fully equipped kitchen & BBQ, it was so nice to shop the market for food & wine then come home to make a meal. Everyone involved with the apartment, from Kevin & Patti, the owners, to the property manager & cleaning lady were great. Kevin & Patti even contacted us a few times to make sure everything was fine. The apartment is so convenient...just down the stairs to restaurants, shops, walks along the river and twice a week market. It is also very convenient to explore the area of Provence from the hilltop villages to the coast, which we took advantage of quite often. It was always so nice to return to Le Bijou after a long day. We would stay there again & would recommend it to anyone. Thank you Kevin & Patti for sharing your beautiful apartment!

Owner Response: Nice to hear that you enjoyed the apartment and the region during your visit. We just returned from two weeks of beautiful fall weather in L'Isle. We have again added a few more amenities from the local brocantes to add to the charm. We hope you can visit again. Patty and Kevin

This adorable apartment was our daily refuge after hitting the tourist trail each day as its central location enabled us to explore the region and come "home" to our retreat and giving us the experience of life in a French village. All the perched villages, wine regions, Roman ruins, canoeing were easy day trips ending with a beverage on the river and dinner at any of a number of outstanding restaurants. Listening to musicians playing in the café below on Sunday afternoon after the amazing market ended was a delight as was waking to the church bells ringing in town. You can't help but stock up at the Sunday market and savor your purchases, both food and souvenirs, while relaxing on the terrace. The owners and their local agent are more than helpful as were many shop owners and neighbors we met because of their recommendations. What an experience and what a wonderful apartment, tastefully decorated and fabulously and efficiently equipped! Thank you for a dream vacation!

The kitchen was perfect for preparing some of the gorgeous produce found in the market and we loved eating on the terrace. Looking at the tiled rooflines around us was so romantic and dream-like! The modern updates of the apartment were lovely and very comfortable. Patty and Kevin, as well as Pamela, our local agent, couldn't have been any nicer or more helpful. It was an especially big help to have free international phone calls as we did have a family emergency while visting and had to make many calls to the US. We have been to Provence before and will come again. I will definitely plan on re-visiting Le Bijou if my knees will let me climb 2 flights of stairs in the future! Merci for a wonderful stay!

Le Bijou translates as "small & elegant", which is a spot-on description for this wonderful apartment in the lovely village of L'Isle sur la Sorgue. As a solo female, older traveler, I wanted to experience life in a beautiful Provence village, yet feel secure & comfortable in a homelike setting. Patty & Kevin have thought of absolutely everything to make a stay in their well-appointed apartment just as perfect as can be. From my initial contact until my last day, they were flawlessly accommodating & helpful in every way. I arrived via train from Paris (the TGV from CDG then a local from Avignon) and Pam, their property manager met me & was amazingly helpful & kind. My two weeks at Le Bijou were everything I had hoped for and then some. I never tired of walking all over this lovely old town, strolling by the ever-present river, and finding wonderful shops & restaurants, with kind & helpful people wherever I went. I wanted to be able to take advantage of the markets to cook at home with the awesome local produce, which was made so easy with the great kitchen at Le Bijou. Exploring other villages nearby was a terrific experience and so easy to do when a friend came from London & rented a car. As every other review will tell you, this is the perfect place to stay in this incredible area of Provence. No wonder Patty & Kevin chose this particular village after all their years exploring France – and then designed a perfect place to feel at home there! Many thanks for making my visit the “time of my life”!!

Le Bijou is a gem, but so is the town of Isle sur La Sorgue. The apartment is comfortable, compact and perfectly furnished on the second floor (third floor for Americans) of a very typical French building in the center of the ancient village. The apartment has everything you’d need to immediately feel at home. Though it faces on the main street of the village, with the windows closed, any street noise is not noticeable. We stayed at Le Bijou in December so we can’t comment on what the apartment would be like in spring or summer with windows open. (Unfortunately this also meant we were only able to use the terrasse of the apartment for a few hours a day.) With a well-appointed kitchen for eating in and enough restaurants in town to eat out, Le Bijou is the perfect setting for a relaxing vacation. Isle sur La Sorgue is located within easy travel distance of some of the major attractions of the region and is an excellent place to “come home to” after a day of “touristing.” There’s a supermarket within walking distance and another larger one a few kilometers away. There are boulangeries, pâtisseries, wine shops, cheese shops and cafés all within a five-minute walk. Have breakfast in Le Bijou with fresh croissants and you’ll want to stay forever! As for food, the Sunday marketplace is not to be missed. You can buy food as fresh as any farmer’s market you’ve ever been to, but there are also rug sellers, booksellers, knife sellers and a myriad of other stalls. And, of course, there are the antique dealers…. Isle sur la Sorgue is known for its antique markets, and you’ll want to take home that 17th century bedstead, until you realize it won’t fit in your suitcase. The village is filled with pleasant people who will allow you to think you speak perfect French even if you never got past “la plume de ma tante….” On a budget or on the dream vacation, Le Bijou in Isle sue la Sorgue is a perfect place from which to see southern France.

We stayed here for two weeks in October 2013 for a cycling holiday. It was the perfect apartment and a fantastic location for cycling. In addition, L'Isle Sur La Sorgue has two markets each week, each filled with wonderful foods and products from Provence. There are many restaurants, bakeries, shops, wine stores, meat stores, and more within a few steps of the front door. We stayed here without a car and walked to everything we needed. Perhaps more important, the owners of Le Bijou were amazingly helpful before and during our stay. They sent us information about what to do, how to shop at the market, what to buy at the market, where to go to sight see, and more. They have a binder in the apartment that explains everything about the apartment (how to use the washing machine, how to use the dishwasher, how to use the TV, etc.) and offers tips about the area, restaurant reviews, and how to enjoy your stay.

I have been doing vacation apartment rental long before it became so popular, and I am always a little nervous: will it live up to my expectations? will it present me with unwelcome surprises? how convenient it will turn out to be - basic considerations any tourist has. Le Bijou and the entire experience of dealing with its owners and manager proved to be totally delightful and easy. After all, who wants complications on their vacation?! First, dealing with the owner was very pleasant and fun all throughout the process - from initial VRBO inquiry to the moment I asked her about the hangers she used in the apartment closet (they are incredible and from TJMaxx:) She always responded immediately and with a desire to help. Second, and we only realized it after we spent some time in the village, the location cannot be better, not only the apartment itself is in the heart of the very busy village, not only I'sle-sur-la-Sorgue is breathtakingly gorgeous, but it's extremely convenient if you want to use it as a base for further Provence exploration. It's close to the major roads and we didn't have to drive anywhere for more than an hour to see Avignon, Arles, Beau, Aix, etc, not to mention smaller but no less unforgettable trips to Gordes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, etc. And finally, the apartment itself - a testament not only to its owners' sense of adventure but to their impeccable taste and a good eye for detail. It's small, but utterly charming and has EVERYTHING a seasoned tourist may need. It's been completely renovated, so the bathroom and kitchen are not only beautiful but new and very well equipped for modern needs. Kitchen has everything you may think of and then some. There were also some basic staples like sugar and spices and olive oil and vinegar provided for our use, which was thoughtful and convenient. Little bedroom has a wonderful new closet with tons of storage space and an extremely comfortable bed. And don't forget a sunny terrace - we had all of our meals there, and we cooked a lot on this trip because we simply could not ignore the bounty offered on market days - Thursday and a much bigger one on Sunday. It was a feast for the senses and the prices were quite decent too. The apartment is also 5 min walk from free parking which was wonderful after long days of sightseeing. The town itself is very easy to navigate and has tons of good restaurants and ice-cream cafes. My husband and I kept saying what a smart choice Le Bijou was!

Owner Response: Thank you for taking the time to craft such a thorough and kind endorsement of our apartment in Provence. It has been a wonderful adventure for us through which we have made new friends in France, and in guests such as you.We have had no shortage of help along the way and cannot take full credit for the design, remodeling and decor. The finished product exceeded our expectations. It is indeed a great base from which to explore the Vaucluse, Luberon and Cote du Rhone vineyards. We are happy to hear that you traveled throughout and experienced the region, ate well and found our apartment appointed to your satisfaction. We hope you are able to visit again. Patty

We arrived home this weekend after a delightful holiday touring around Provence. The stay in your apartment was wonderful, so beautifully appointed and positioned, it was everything we hoped for from your description (and more). L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a gem of a place a real treasure trove for antique hunters and very friendly. A place we hope to return to someday.

This charming apartment is located in a perfect spot to enjoy the lovely town. The apartment is comfortable, exactly described in the advertisement, and comes complete with every thing one would need during a stay. There was easy, free parking close by. The agent, Pam, was professional, helpful and very knowledgeable. Pam was flexible in meeting us to give us the key, helped find us when lost (due to temporary road closure), and provided tips about areas to see. Patty and Kevin, the owners, were easy to deal with, also very helpful and clearly wanted us to enjoy staying in their beautiful apartment. It was a delightful week...

Owner Response: Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that you found our friend Pam helpful in getting you settled.

We arrived in l'Isle sur la Sorgue after a month of non-stop travel. We immediately sank into the comfort and amenities provided. A beautiful complete kitchen, luxurious bathroom, comfortable bedroom, delightful terrace, TV and Internet... what more could an American ask for?! The location is perfect, you can lean out the window to the small square below and watch the market bustle and village life. Bus, train, bike are all modes of easy transportation to explore the area. You can even rent a car at the grocery store. The region is filled with beautiful villages, nature walks, rivers, Mediterranean climate. You will never run out of things to enjoy,

Owner Response: Merci for your kind comments. We are pleased that you found the apartment comfortable for your visit. The village is a great place to unwind after keeping a frantic pace. We hope you will visit again. Stay in touch. Patty and Kevin

My husband and I were recently the first guests at Le Bijou and we cannot recommend the apartment highly enough. The photos accurately show how nicely the apartment has been renovated but can't show all the thought to little details. We felt 'at home' right away and there was nothing we needed during our stay that was not there - right down to a flashlight on the nightstand. The town itself is lovely and one could spend numerous days enjoying the many restaurants and stores and the locals were all very friendly and helpful. It is also ideally situated to explore the many charming towns of Provence. A booklet in the apartment compiled by the owners explaining how to use the various appliances etc. and containing recommendations on the local restaurants as well as nearby towns to visit, was very helpful. Our contact with the owners, Patty and Kevin, during the reservation process was a pleasure and their call to see if we had everything we needed once we had arrived was much appreciated. Thank you Kevin and Patty for helping to make it one of our most memorable trips. We hope to visit again soon. Denise and Larry

Owner Response: Thank you Denise and Larry for sharing your impressions of our apartment in L'Isle sur la Sorgue. We enjoyed the opportunity to assist you with your trip. We have found helping our guests plan their trips an added bit of pleasure to owning the apartment. We have yet to tire of talking about travel in Provence. We are happy that you found the village ideal for your visit to the Vaucluse. It is a great place to be anytime of the year. We hope you visit again and start up where you left off in October. Merci, Kevin et Patty
